The freestyle BMX is made more for tricks and stunts than for racing. The tires are usually smoother for street riding and the bikes are often more heavy to withstand the pounding of tricks. They often come with rear and/or front axel pegs to stand on for stunts and usually rear and front hand brakes.

BMX Freestyle began to emerge in the early eighties when BMX racers started performing tricks with their bikes at competitions. American athlete Bob Haro is considered the Godfather of BMX Freestyle: he took the new discipline under his wing, giving demonstrations across the USA at first and then worldwide.
